Staying Connected to The Weight Management Center - June 4, 2009

June 4, 2009 – 7:37 am

Decisions are hard to make. And, they are even harder to stick by once they’ve been made, aren’t they?  Stuff comes up, it’s difficult to stay on the straight and narrow and contemplating what it will be like to live without the thing that we are most comforted by is just plain terrifying.  In fact, in the heat of the moment, I find myself regressing (if not completely, at least partially) by giving in on one or more levels to the very thing I’ve decided to stop doing.  Why?  What happens when we wake up and make the decision: I will eat 1,100 calories today. Yet, by 5:30 our resolve is out the window?

Taking action we can commit to over the long haul is a process.   I’m coming to find that there is a readiness factor that, for most of us, can only be achieved by many (for some of us let me repeat the word many) starts and stops.  We’ve all heard the phrase “two steps forward and one step back,” well, it’s true.  Sometimes we move forward on something for as long as we can, and then we slip back, a bit.  We let ourselves be seduced by the sight, smell, taste, feel or promise of something pleasurable despite what we know about the long term effects of such a food, feeling or friendship.  Yet, we can’t resist.

It’s a spinning wheel.  We glean a bit of knowledge, gather some energy to move forward, attempt to stick with it and then some how we get derailed.  But all is not lost.  Truly.  It’s not.  Of course, I have to believe what I write, or I won’t be able to convince anyone not to give up, to hang in there.  No matter how many times we’ve tried before, it’s worth continuing to pursue what we need in terms of living the healthy life we were meant to live.  Do it.  Decide to take action and move in a new direction.

There are still spots in our restart class on Thursdays at 12:00.  Call or email me if you’d like to discuss this option.

We hope to see you in class soon!
